Birding tours in Chiapas, Mexico.
   

    We offer various birding routes in this marvelous state, home to more than 600 species of birds. Each of these tours is focused on specific species and have been developed in collaboration with local communities to provide authentic interactions, food, accommodation and, of course birding spots!
    Since we are based in Chiapas our tours are offered throughout the year and can be personalised in terms of location, duration or difficulty of the trails.
We also offer birding one-day trips in San Cristóbal de las Casas and surroundings for one or up to six persons.




 
Warbler Tour
Warbler Tour (3 days)
Cost:  11,000 MXN per person.

Group size: 2-6.


This tour takes place in the surroundings of San Cristóbal de las Casas, where roughly 280 bird species can be seen.
    Here, we will look for more than 30 species of warblers and specialities such as the pink-headed warbler, the rufous-browed wren, blue-throated motmot, black-throated jay, wine-throated hummingbird or unspotted saw-whet owl.
    The most suitable time to take this tour would be between the end of September and beginning of May.

Hawk-eagle

Hawk-eagle Tour (3 days)  

Cost:  14,500 MXN per person.

Group size: 2-6.

If you want to see abundance of birds regardless of the season then this is your best option. During this trip we will transit from thick and bushy vegetation to the tropical rainforest of the bioreserve "El Ocote". This route has spectacular high viewpoints. Here we might see some Mexican endemics such as the Nava's wren, flammulated flycatcher, red-breasted chat  or impressive tropical species, such as the black hawk-eagle, ornate hawk-eagle or even the lovely cotinga. We will stay with the guardians of this forest who will take good care of us with local cuisine and a comfortable lodge. Pick-up and drop-off in Tuxtla Gutierrez or San Cristóbal de las Casas. Bunting Tour (3 days)

Cost:  17,000 MXN per person.

Group size: 2-6.

This trip is for those who are interested in Mexican endemics and waterbirds. We will travel to the municipality of Pijijiapan with some birding stops in between. There, the giant wren, yellow-winged cacique, pacific parakeet and yellow-naped parrot can be found. To see the abundant avian life of the mangroves we will take a boat trip after which a breakfast, of fresh Mexican seafood, awaits us. Then, we walk on the beach to spot seabirds. We travel back to Tonalá, to the mountains, looking for orange-breasted bunting, Rosita's bunting, cinnamon-tailed sparrow, green-fronted hummingbird, turquoise-crowned hummingbird, west Mexican chachalaca, citreoline trogon, flammulated flycatcher.   This tour can be done throughout the year however in the months of March and April one can witness the massive migration of birds of prey that must pass through this region. Jay

Jay Tour (4 days)

Cost:  19,000 MXN per person. Group size: 2-6.

We begin in one of the last great high-elevation wetlands of Chiapas, in Comitán. A great place to see waterbirds such as the shy pie-billed grebe, sora, virgina rail and the grass wren. We then move to Chinkultic, a Mayan archeological site which offers a wide variety of birds and great views of the basin. For the remainder of the trip we explore Montebello National Park by land and water. Here, multiple shy and uncommon cloud-forest dwellers can be spotted such as the resplendet quetzal, azure-hooded jay, highland guan, blue-throated motmot, green-throated mountain-gem among many woodcreepers, wrens, jays and tanagers. Just before the end of our trip we make one last stop at the Mayan ruins of Tenam Puente, where we will look for the slender shear-tail, red-breasted chat, belted flycatcher and the black-and-white mockingbird. Horned guan

Horned guan Tour (4 days)   

Cost:  21,000 MXN per person.

Group size: 2-6.

This route goes through the protected nature reserve of the Tacaná volcano which is the highest peak of Chiapas (4,090 m.a.s.l.). It consists of pine-oak forest with some remnants of mountainous cloud forest, one of the last refuges for birds that are native to Chiapas and Guatemala such as pink-headed warbler, resplendent quetzal, horned guan, rufous sabrewing or azure-rumped tanager.   During our visit we will be camping in a Mame community, the native people who live at the base of the volcano. Most suitable time to take this tour is between the end of October and the end of April. Pick up and drop-off at the airport of Tapachula.
